Ah, Copenhagen's cover girl, Den Lille Havfrue. The Little Mermaid. Sculpted in 1913 by Edward Eriksen, who took his cue from Hans Christian Andersen, she was presented to the city on the arm of a third man, Carl Jacobsen. If you drink Carlsberg you should know who he is. The Lille one -- and she is, as you can see here, quite petite -- has suffered her share of indignities over the years: decapitated in '67, de-armed in '83 (bronze anatamy never recovered: both were recast), she lost her head again in '98. It later turned up in a box outside a local TV station. All this after waiting three centuries to turn human. Fairy tale life, indeed.
